Anti-Parasite Treatment

We have a broad choice of products to help protect your pets from the various parasites that are in the environment.

Understanding Parasites In Pets

Parasites are an everyday problem in pets, and if left untreated, they can lead to serious illnesses and health concerns. We provide a range of anti-parasiticide treatments tailored to your pet’s specific needs, helping to prevent and treat infections and infestations.

Common Parasites and Their Risks

Fleas – The most common parasite affecting pets. While fleas can only live on animals, they can jump up to 200 times their body length, bite humans, and cause discomfort. Fleas lay eggs around the home, leading to infestations. Prevention is much easier and more cost-effective than treating an infestation.

Ticks – Found in tall grass and vegetation, ticks attach by biting and embedding themselves into the skin. They can transmit diseases such as Lyme disease and babesiosis. If your pet spends time outdoors, we recommend a product that includes tick prevention to reduce the risk of disease and infection.

Intestinal Worms – Roundworm and tapeworm commonly live in the digestive tract of dogs and cats and can spread to humans, including children and babies. Some worms can produce over 100,000 eggs per day, which are excreted in your pet’s faeces and contaminate the environment. Preventative treatments from the practice are essential to protect both pets and people.

Lungworm – This potentially fatal parasite is spread through infected slugs and snails. Not all worming treatments cover lungworm, so it’s vital to use veterinary-prescribed treatments to ensure all parasites are effectively and safely covered.

Parasite Prevention and Treatment Options

Anti-parasite treatments come in a variety of forms, allowing us to prescribe the best option for your pet based on their age, weight, breed, and lifestyle. Available treatments include:

  • Tablets
  • Spot-ons
  • Granules
  • Liquid suspensions

Our veterinary team will ensure the best method is prescribed and can provide guidance on safe application. Our nurses are happy to demonstrate how to administer the medication correctly and effectively.

Recommended Treatment Plans

Different parasites require different treatment schedules. We offer tailored plans to ensure your pet stays protected:

  • Ecto-parasite treatments (for fleas, ticks, mites, and lice) are typically administered monthly to every three months, depending on the prescribed treatment plan.

  • Endo-parasite treatments (for roundworm, lungworm, heartworm, and tapeworm) should be administered every 3-6 months, depending on the product and plan.

  • Young puppies and kittens may require more frequent treatments to ensure adequate protection.

By following a structured parasite prevention plan, you can help keep your pet healthy and protect your home and family from infestations.
